We are very excited to launch an enrichment programme in 2025, aimed at upskilling and empowering our learners, thus contributing to a holistic education and memorable experiences.

• We currently run the Charlie Newspaper, which is learner-centred and learner-driven, and very popular among our learners.
• In the field of Drama, we continue with our participation at Fraserburg, the country’s oldest school drama festival, while we also host our annual Play Competition. Later this year, we will introduce House Plays.
• Furthermore, we are bringing back our Charlie Boys and Angels singing groups
• Lastly, we are fully committed to ensuring that learners with talent in public speaking, as well as other performing arts platforms, are provided with opportunities to participate – whether at eisteddfod or competition level.

Should your child wish to participate in any cultural activity, please ensure that they engage with our team of enthusiastic educators. Mrs Gerard, in particular, is open to all ideas and will assist your child in finding the right educator for guidance.

Charlie Hofmeyr offers learners the opportunity to express themselves through photography. Club members regularly compete in national and international competitions, achieving top results.

Since 2020, they have been ranked as the best school photography club in both the Western Cape and South Africa. Several members have won medals, including a “Best Youth Photographer” World Cup winner from Germany.

In 2024, the Photographic Society of South Africa awarded them the titles of Best School Photography Club Nationally and Best for International Participation. Some members’ photos were also published in FIAP News, distributed in over 90 countries.

The club meets on the first Monday of every month for photo evaluation and feedback. Parents and teachers are welcome to attend, and the winning photo is featured on the PSSA monthly website.

Charlie photographers currently rank first nationally, with Sofia van der Merwe in first place and Ané Sauer in fourth among South Africa’s top five school photographers. They are now preparing for international entries in the USA and Germany.

The Charlie Boys is traditionally a vocal ensemble of male voices, combining elements of a capella and accompaniment. Likewise, the Charlie Angels comprises of female voices. Song selections range through genres of both modern and traditional. There is no limit to the number of spaces in the team. The only criteria is a passion for musical performance and dedication.

Official practice times are on a Monday from 14.00 to 15.30.

“Die Charlie” is Charlie Hofmeyr’s school newspaper, published quarterly. The editorial team is responsible for writing articles, designing the layout, printing the newspaper, as well as its sales and distribution. The learners handle everything themselves, with a teacher overseeing the process.

Since the learners work largely independently, they develop self-discipline and the ability to prioritise. Additionally, it fosters an interest in relevant issues beyond the school environment. Learners can apply to join one or more of the different sections of the newspaper.

The teachers in charge are Mrs Derine Conradie (overall coordinator) and Miss Anke Nel, who oversees marketing.

At Charlie Hofmeyr High School, we are looking forward to an exciting Public Speaking year in 2025. The school has learners with great talent and immense potential. Under the guidance of Miss Joh-Mari Marais, learners will have the opportunity to participate in the ATKV Public Speaking Competition.

The 2025 themes for Grade 8 and 9 learners to choose from are: Klatergoud (Fool’s Gold), Vergelyk (Compare), and Mengelmoes (Medley).

For Grade 10, 11, and 12, the themes are: Debakel (Debacle), Agenda (Agenda), and Wentelbaan (Orbit).

Learners can choose to participate in either the prepared or impromptu public speaking categories. Individual coaching sessions will be arranged with participants to refine their speeches and improve their delivery skills.

In 2025, several highly esteemed Eisteddfods will take place, where Charlie’s learners can participate in the following categories: recitation, monologues, and dialogues in Afrikaans or English.

Learners who are interested can receive coaching from Miss Joh-Mari Marais. We eagerly look forward to seeing their results!

The Charlie Drama Club has grown and improved significantly over the past few years. Every year, we participate in the Logan Theatre Festival in Fraserburg.

In October, we also host the Charlie Theatre Festival, where various high schools and primary schools from the area present high-quality stage productions.
